Fundraising Tips
1. Don’t be afraid to ask! The #1 reason why people don’t give donations is because they aren’t asked. The most effective method of fundraising is face-to-face and one-on-one.
2. Offer your own reasons for participating in the stair climb. Whether you’re a fitness freak, a fan of United Way, or just wanted to help out your colleagues, be prepared to talk about why this is important to you.
3. Always have pledge forms with you. (Available on-line or from your coordinator)
4. Go off campus. Some faculty and staff members will have already made their United Way donation. Don’t forget to ask your off-campus contacts.
5. Let donors know where their money is going. The other documents posted on this site illustrate where United Way donations go, and the impact that donations have.
6. Let donors know they’ll get tax receipts. (Remember, donors have to fill out pledge cards to get tax receipts.)
7. Familiarize yourself with United Way to answer basic questions. Check out: www.ucalgary.ca/unitedway and www.calgaryunitedway.org
8. Give donors options. Donations can be made by cash, cheque, credit card, or, for university faculty & staff, payroll deductions.
9. Follow up – get back to people with answers to questions, pledge forms, etc. Gavin Peat ([email protected]) is your resource for questions on how the stair climb works. Alexis Berezan ([email protected]) can answer questions about the university’s campaign and what United Way does.
10. Don’t forget to thank your donors
